The Tree That Always Has Guests

In the tropical forest, some trees command attention with their huge flowers or imposing size. And then there are others that quietly keep their magic to themselves. Bourreria superba belongs to this latter group.

For much of the year, it goes almost unnoticed, but when it blooms, its small, white, fragrant flowers attract a multitude of bees, butterflies, and other insects coming in search of food. Shortly after, the real transformation takes place: its branches begin to fill with yellow and orange fruits that quickly become a favorite food for many birds.

Every fruit that disappears into a bird’s beak starts a new journey. The seeds are carried to other parts of the forest, where they will be able to germinate and bring life to new trees. Thus, B. superba not only feeds the wildlife, but also helps the forest continue to grow generation after generation.

Although few people know its name, this species is a fundamental part of the tropical forests of western Mexico. Like many native trees, it faces threats due to habitat loss and fragmentation. Conserving it means protecting the pollinators that visit its flowers, the birds that consume its fruits, and the entire ecosystem that depends on these relationships.
