Bletia macristhmochila

The orchid of the month for June is one of the most beautiful and ephemeral species in our flora: Bletia macristhmochila. It is a geophytic plant, meaning a species capable of storing energy reserves underground in tubers or pseudobulbs during unfavorable seasons. This fascinating orchid inhabits primarily tropical dry forests. It is endemic to Mexico, with records ranging from the states of Oaxaca to Sinaloa in western Mexico, while in central Mexico it is found in Mexico City, Puebla, and Morelos; more recently, some populations have also been located in San Luis Potosí.

The beauty of this species lies in its striking flowers, which usually bloom during spring. Their coloration ranges from pinkish-purple to deep magenta, while the labellum —the modified petal characteristic of orchids— displays an intense purple hue adorned with contrasting yellow or cream-colored keels. The species name refers precisely to the distinctive shape of this labellum, which is long and narrow-necked, giving the flower an elegant and unique appearance.

Bletia macristhmochila, along with other members of the genus Bletia, is commonly known as a “coral orchid” due to the orange-reddish coloration of its pseudobulbs, reminiscent of marine corals.

Beyond its ornamental value, this orchid also holds historical and cultural significance. Like several other orchid species, it was once used to produce a natural adhesive known as tzauhtli, which played an important role in the featherwork art created by pre-Hispanic cultures such as the Mexica.
