Black-headed Siskin

Every month offers us the opportunity to get to know a different species. In August, we venture into the montane pine-oak and cloud forests to discover a small bird that stands out for its vibrant colors: Spinus notatus, commonly known as the Black-headed Siskin. Its name refers to the male’s striking plumage, which is unique among siskins (small cardueline finches). It features a brilliant yellow body contrasted by a black hood covering its crown, the sides of its head, its throat, and its upper chest. The female is very similar, though displaying somewhat duller tones.

This species is distributed from central Mexico to Nicaragua and occasionally visits the Vallarta Botanical Garden. Although it measures just 10 to 11 cm in length, its restless behavior, agile movements, and characteristic song make it one of the garden’s most eye-catching residents. If you are fortunate enough to spot one, you will likely see it feeding on seeds—especially from pine trees, one of its favorites—though it also consumes seeds from grasses and plants in the sunflower family (Asteraceae).

The next time you walk through the garden, keep your eyes on the branches and don’t forget to bring your camera—you might just catch a glimpse of this lively little visitor.
