Common Name: Chorizo con huevo
English Name: No common name
A pseudobulbous epiphytic orchid with a very funny name in spanish and a somewhat complicated
taxonomic history. The peculiar name in spanish of this orchid refers to its resemblance to a
typical Mexican breakfast, the “huevito con chorizo” (scrambled eggs with chorizo).
However, its taxonomic positioning has been complicated. Originally published under the name
Oncidium brachyphyllum by the English botanist John Lindley in 1842, the species was later
renamed Cohniella brachyphyllum by Dr. Germán Carnevali in 2010 in a review of the genus
Cohniella in Mexico. Following a review of the Orchidaceae family in Mexico in 2011, Dr. Rolando
Jiménez Machorro gave the taxon the name Trichocentrum brachyphyllum.
Currently, the debate over the name of this plant continues among experts. What we can all agree
on is that it is a beautiful flower that can be found blooming during the month of February in the
Vallarta Botanical Garden.
