San Blas Jay

Cyanocorax sanblasianus

By Nat. Eduardo Villegas

Its Latin name, Cyanocorax sanblasianus, means Blue Raven; it belongs to the raven family and has blue feathers. San Blas Jays are endemic in the west of México, from Nayarit to Guerrero states.

Their habitat is subtropical and deciduous forest; they are often spotted inside the Vallarta Botanical Gardens and the surrounding areas, spreading their majestic blue wings and mimicking other bird calls. The females can lay up to 10 green eggs spotted with brown and purple. You can see them often coexisting with the Yellow Wing Caciques (Cassiculus melanicterus).
