Oscar Rodr\u00edguez Ramos <\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"45\">March 4, 2026<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"45\">A Mexican Orchid with History and a Subtle Fragrance<\/h3>\n<p>The\u00a0<b>Orchid of the Month<\/b>\u00a0is\u00a0<i>Prosthechea madrensis<\/i>, commonly known in Mexico as\u00a0<b>flor de concha<\/b>\u00a0(shell flower). This species stands out not only for the delicate beauty of its cream-colored flowers and its soft fragrance, but also for the fascinating botanical history surrounding its discovery and classification.<\/p>\n<p>Native to the mountains of western and southern Mexico and extending as far south as Nicaragua, this orchid is part of the extraordinary diversity of species that can be admired in the\u00a0<b>Mexican Orchid Conservatory at the Vallarta Botanical Gardens<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>The name\u00a0<b>\u201cmadrensis\u201d<\/b>\u00a0refers to the place where the plant was first collected: the\u00a0<b>Sierra Madre del Sur<\/b>. The specimen was gathered during the expeditions of the French explorer and naturalist\u00a0<b>Eug\u00e8ne Langlass\u00e9<\/b>, who traveled through various regions of Mexico documenting its flora.<\/p>\n<p>The species was originally described under the scientific name\u00a0<b><i>Epidendrum madrense<\/i><\/b>. However, the history of this botanical record took an unexpected turn. In\u00a0<b>1943<\/b>, the original specimen collected by Langlass\u00e9\u2014along with his detailed scientific illustrations\u2014was lost in a fire. Fortunately, a tracing of the original drawings was preserved and is now safeguarded at the\u00a0<b>Harvard University Herbaria<\/b>, allowing the essential characteristics of the species to remain documented.<\/p>\n<p>Decades later, during a\u00a0<b>taxonomic revision in 2007<\/b>\u00a0of two species of the genus\u00a0<i>Prosthechea<\/i>\u00a0from El Salvador, botanists examined a specimen that showed\u00a0<b>intermediate characteristics between the two species<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>When researchers compared this individual with historical descriptions, they discovered that it matched the characteristics of\u00a0<i>Epidendrum madrense<\/i>. As a result of this analysis, in\u00a0<b>2009<\/b>\u00a0the species was officially reclassified under its current name:<br \/><b><i>Prosthechea madrensis<\/i><\/b><b>\u00a0(Schltr.) Karremans.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Taxonomic revisions like this are common in botany and reflect how scientific knowledge evolves as more specimens are studied and new evidence is analyzed.<\/p>\n<p>The genus\u00a0<b><i>Prosthechea<\/i><\/b>\u00a0includes approximately\u00a0<b>112 species of orchids<\/b>, distributed mainly throughout tropical America. At the\u00a0<b>Mexican Orchid Conservatory<\/b>, visitors can find\u00a0<b>14 species of this genus<\/b>, making the garden an ideal place to appreciate the diversity of these fascinating plants.<\/p>\n<p>Although many\u00a0<i>Prosthechea<\/i>\u00a0species may appear similar at first glance, distinguishing them requires careful attention to detail. Unlike\u00a0<i>P. fragrans<\/i>, a closely related species known for its strong fragrance,\u00a0<i>P. madrensis<\/i>\u00a0has a\u00a0<b>more subtle scent<\/b>. Even so, fragrance remains a useful characteristic for identifying the species.<\/p>\n<p>A good tip for orchid enthusiasts:\u00a0<b>don\u2019t just observe the flowers\u2014take a moment to experience
